Brixton bloody loves Hallowe’en. My, there were some good costumes last year (there are some photos of Brixton last Hallowe’en here). Although I don’t reckon the guy dressed as Jimmy Saville at the Duke will be recycling his costume this year!
Hallowe’en’s right in the middle of the week, but, with the exception of Kaff and the Windmill, most Brixton watering holes have deemed this Saturday as the night to Get Dressed Up. Here’s a list of what’s going on around and about. Let me know if I missed anything!
(Of course the best thing about Hallowe’en is the brilliantness of the walk of shamers the morning after. Dressing up as a giant pea pod is suddenly less of a hilarious idea when you wake up somewhere accidental the next morning. If it wasn’t so cruel it would be an excellent topic for a photo blog…)
Friday 25th October:
The Grand Union are starting early, having their Hallowe’en party on Friday. There’s a free cocktail on offer if you join the mailing list, and they’ll also be awarding a bar tab for the best costume, as well as giving out raffle prizes.
(123 Acre Lane, SW2 5UA. 5pm–2am. Free)
Saturday 26th October:
Dogstar are putting on a Hallowe’en-y version of their weekly Audio Sushi night, with DJ Jeffrey Disaster. However, they tweeted earlier in the week that all the available tables were now reserved and the guestlist was nearly full, so expect it to be completely rammed.
(389 Coldharbour Lane, SW9 8LQ. 7pm–4am. £5 after 11pm)
The Duke of Edinburgh threw a great Hallowe’en party last year. They’re offering a £100 bar tab for the best dressed, so there’s sure to be some pretty inventive costumes and they really go to town on the decorations too. Here’s Beetlejuice fanning the flames in the garden. It’s set to be a pretty chilly evening on Sat, so fingers crossed for a fire in the garden again!
(204 Ferndale Road, SW9 8AG, from 8 til late. Free)
The Electric Social’s Hallowe’en special kicks off at 9pm with the guys from Nude Disco playing upstairs. You can check out their music policy here
(40 Acre Lane, SW2 5SP, 9pm–3am. Free)
The Ritzy is showing a spine tingling (and bum numbing) double bill of classic horror flicks Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. That’s four hours of eighties slasherness.
(Windrush Square, SW2 1JG. 10.30pm. £10.50)
Upstairs at the Ritzy are doing it Day of the Dead style with a Carribean and South American inspired tropical bash. Shake your chains and get down with your bad ghoul at !Bombo! Hallowe’en Carnival.
(Windrush Square, SW2 1JG. 8pm – 2am. £4)
The White Horse is hosting regular DJ Lick the Transmitter at their fancy dress bash. If (hazy) memories are correct the playlist is pretty varied, although it’s described as ‘reggae, funk, dancehall, New Orleans funk and electro’. Expect the usual shenanigans and probably a bit of a queue to get in.
(94 Brixton Hill, SW2 1QN, 9pm–3am. Free)
Hallowe’en Proper and next weekend:
And finally, if you don’t lose any crucial bits of your costume you can give it another outing on Wednesday at the Windmill. Celebrating Hallowe’en on the very proper day to do so (they appear to feel quite strongly about this) with A Night For the Living Dead – three live bands and a DJ set. Will the roof dog be dressing up?
(22 Blenheim Gardens, SW2 5BZ. From 7.30pm. £3 in costume, £4 otherwise)
Or next Saturday, 3rd at Kaff Bar’s Saints and Sinners party. (They’re holding the Brixton Bolt after party on Saturday).
(64-68 Atlantic Road, SW9 8PY. 7pm-12pm. Free)

All Soul’s Day is next weds so the windmill are correct ! Granted it doesn’t suit so well as a wknd. And Roof Dog is dead
maybe he’ll pop back and surprise us on the night the undead walk …
